How to measure a horse bit
Getting the right size bit for your horse is essential when it comes to his comfort. But how do you measure a horse bit? Let us help.
Step 1- Get a tape measure that shows inches. As with lots of other things in the equestrian world, bits are measured in inches.
Step 2 – Put the bit on a flat surface to ensure an accurate measurement.
Step 2- Measure from the inside of the ring or the cheek on one side across the mouthpiece to the other side. And that’s your measurement.
How do you know what size bit your horse needs?
If you’re swapping one bit for another, it’s easy as you can just measure your existing bit (assuming it’s the correct size) and that’s the size you need.
If you haven’t got a bit for your horse, you can use a bit measuring device, a piece of bailing twine, or another straight, smooth item that you can put in your horse’s mouth, where the bit would sit. Then, just mark on the item either side of the horse’s mouth and measure that distance.
