It protects your head every time you ride and that means it\u2019s working hard behind the scenes, even when you don\u2019t realise it. But riding hats don\u2019t last forever and knowing when to replace yours could make all the difference in an accident.<\/p><p>So, how do you know when it\u2019s time to change your hat? Here\u2019s what you need to know\u2026<\/p><ol><li><strong>You\u2019ve Had a Fall<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Even if your hat <em>looks<\/em> fine after a fall, it might not be. Riding hats are designed to absorb impact &#8211; so if they\u2019ve done their job once, they may not do it again. <strong>Our advice:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve fallen and your head hit the ground (even slightly), it\u2019s safest to replace your hat. You should never ride in a hat that\u2019s been compromised.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>It\u2019s 3 to 5 Years Old <\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Time flies and so does the effectiveness of your hat\u2019s materials. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your riding hat <strong>every 3 to 5 years<\/strong>, even if you haven\u2019t fallen. Why? The materials inside, like the protective foam, naturally degrade over time. This means they won\u2019t absorb impact as well as they should, putting you at risk. <strong>Top tip:<\/strong> If you ride regularly, aim to replace your hat <strong>every 3 years<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong>It\u2019s Been Stored Improperly <\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Hats are tough, but they don\u2019t like heat, damp or being squashed in the back of the car. Exposure to sunlight, moisture or extreme temperatures can weaken the materials and affect the fit. <strong>Beware of <\/strong>leaving your hat in the lorry or tack room all year round &#8211; especially in summer or winter.<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong>It Doesn\u2019t Fit Like It Used To <\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Heads don\u2019t really change, but hats can. If your hat suddenly feels loose, pinches or moves around when you ride, it\u2019s not giving you full protection.
