And sweat can leave the coat matted meaning the natural evaporation can\u2019t happen so effectively.\u00a0 The coat stays damp for longer, making it more difficult for the horse to keep warm.<\/li><li>So, to help us manage that sweatiness we\u2019ll often clip them. They allow a layer of warm air to circulate around the horse\u2019s body, encouraging any moisture to come away from the horse\u2019s body so that it can evaporate into the atmosphere.<\/p><p>If the cooler you\u2019re using is effective then you should see water beading on the outside of the rug as the horse dries underneath.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41c3407 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"41c3407\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What\u2019s the best cooler rug to choose?\n\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cdeb1f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6cdeb1f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Well \u2013 it would be great if there was an easy answer to that one!<\/p><p>In truth the best cooler rug is the one that is most appropriate for your horse and in an ideal world you should probably have two (or maybe even three).\u00a0 Where budget is a factor or if you can only really have one then you should probably consider a simple fleece.\u00a0 They can be great value for money, are generally effective, are easy to wash and quick to dry.<\/p><p>Things to consider when choosing the most appropriate cooler for your horse:<\/p><ul><li>How heavy is it? You\u2019ll almost certainly want something thicker for use in the winter \u2013 but be careful it\u2019s not too thick if your horse doesn\u2019t generally feel the cold or isn\u2019t clipped.\u00a0 You want to avoid the risk of them sweating up while you\u2019re trying to achieve the opposite.<\/li><li>Can you afford two? In an ideal world you\u2019ll put one cooler on straightaway and swap that for a second when it gets damp through.<\/li><li>How long is your horse likely to wear it for? If your lifestyle means that you can\u2019t stay with your horse as they dry off then fit is super, super important.\u00a0 If you have to leave any rug on an unsupervised horse then you must make sure it\u2019s a great fit, doesn\u2019t pull on the shoulders or dig in at the withers.\u00a0 Bindings that rub can cause lots of horrible problems, not least that your horse might be uncomfortable or in pain.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1390c0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1390c0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Is a cooler just designed to help dry off my horse?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ac2eb6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ac2eb6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>No \u2013 they are very versatile and can be a useful addition to your horse\u2019s wardrobe.\u00a0 You can use them for lots of other things such as:<\/p><ul><li>Moving up and down your horse\u2019s body while you\u2019re grooming them on a chilly day;<\/li><li>Using them as an extra layer under another rug if the temperature drops (but do make sure they fit well);<\/li><li>Using to help regulate your horse\u2019s temperature while they\u2019re travelling;<\/li><li>Folding over your horse\u2019s hind-quarters when you first get going on a cold day (make sure any surcingles are secured out of the way) or while you\u2019re waiting around at a show or an event.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b1f864 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6b1f864\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What types of cooler rugs are there?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5028a8f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5028a8f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>The classic \u2018string vest\u2019 sweat rug and the modern mesh cooler alternative. You can get <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #2e7500;text-decoration: underline\"><a style=\"color: #2e7500;text-decoration: underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rbequestrian.co.uk\/horse-wear\/horse-rugs\/elico-exmoor-fleece-rug-in-navy__1522775\">thin ones<\/a><\/span><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #2e7500;text-decoration: underline\"><a style=\"color: #2e7500;text-decoration: underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rbequestrian.co.uk\/horse-wear\/horse-rugs\/shires-tempest-original-waffle-rug-in-navy__1644885\">thick ones<\/a><\/span><\/span>; bonded ones; cheap ones and <span style=\"color: #2e7500\"><a style=\"color: #2e7500\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rbequestrian.co.uk\/horse-wear\/horse-rugs\/kentucky-show-rug-velvet-in-bordeaux__1645870\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more expensive ones<\/span><\/a><\/span>. All are effective at taking moisture away from the horse. Pick a nice thick one for use in the winter if your horse is clipped.<\/li><li>Jersey coolers. Basically a fleece with a smooth outer surface &#8211; more like a sweatshirt fabric (for example the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbequestrian.co.uk\/horse-wear\/horse-rugs\/lemieux-arika-jersey-tek-rug-in-burgundy__1617799\"><span style=\"color: #2e7547\">LeMieux Arika Jersey Tek Rug<\/span><\/a>). They work in exactly the same way as a fleece but they can look smarter than an inexpensive fleece and they don\u2019t pick up \u2018bits\u2019 (of fluff, hay, shavings etc.) in the same way a fleece can.<\/li><li>Wool and wool mix rugs. The height of luxury and a fabulous natural fabric, wool is well know for its amazing insulating properties (all those sheep can\u2019t be wrong\u2026). Very effective but typically quite thick (we haven\u2019t found a lightweight merino horse rug yet.) They\u2019re perfect for the winter but they\u2019re definitely not a budget option.<\/li><li>Waffle coolers, quilted rugs and the original Thermatex. Made in such a way that the fabric has a textured or honeycomb effect which can help to create more air-pockets and may be more effective.<\/li><\/ul><p>Any other cooler with a fancy name!\u00a0 Maybe something like MaxCool, AirMove or DryFlex (I\u2019ve made these up but you get where I\u2019m coming from!).\u00a0 The principle will be the same so if you like how it looks, it fits your horse nicely and is the right thickness for the time of year then it will probably do what you need it to.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a558c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0a558c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Should I pick one with or without a built in neck?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-92ce034 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"92ce034\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>You can really pick either but again it will probably come down to the type of horse you have and whether you can find a rug that fits well.<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_4135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4135\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4135 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/rbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/09\/QHP-Basic-Fleece-Combo-Blue-from-RB-Equestrian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/rbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/09\/QHP-Basic-Fleece-Combo-Blue-from-RB-Equestrian.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.citrus-lime.com\/rbe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/09\/QHP-Basic-Fleece-Combo-Blue-from-RB-Equestrian-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">QHP Basic Fleece Rug<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In general a horse will be warm if their body is warm (a bit like us keeping our core nice and cosy).\u00a0 We\u2019d probably recommend a neck as being beneficial for horses who are fully clipped out.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c11398 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1c11398\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Anything else I should know?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8abd5f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8abd5f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes, a couple of things:<\/p><ul><li>Don\u2019t be tempted to use a cotton rug as a cooler. Although they\u2019re great for use in the stable to keep the dust and stains away and ideal as an under-rug for sensitive horses or those prone to static, cotton is not great at moving moisture.\u00a0 A cotton rug that gets wet, stays wet and takes ages to dry.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t something you want when you\u2019re trying to get a horse dry and warm.<\/li><li>If your horse is soaking then you can speed up the drying process by giving them a good rub down with a dry towel or cloth.\u00a0 It\u2019s worth trying to get some of the surface moisture off your horse before you put a rug on, particularly if they\u2019re soaking because they\u2019ve been caught in the rain.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1fc70f9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1fc70f9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-20a1372\" data-id=\"20a1372\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not sure which cooler rug is best for your horse?
