Helping to keep you safe in the saddle, and around your horses, is the most important thing we do as a business. And looking after your body protector is one of the most important things you can do.
So we’ve put together a FAQ list to help you get the most out of your new garment.
How should I store my body protector?
- At room temperature, ideally on a hanger, zips and fastenings all done up. If your body protector stays at room temperature it’ll be the most comfortable it can be when you put it on. A damp tack-room, car boot in winter or dangling on a hot radiator are terrible choices.
- If your body protector gets wet, then let it dry naturally and air properly. Mould, smells and bacteria will not help keep it in tip-top condition.
- Check the fixtures and fittings regularly. We keep replacement elastics in stock and can arrange a replacement zip service on body protectors that are reasonably new.
How can I clean my body protector?
- Less is more so try and limit any cleaning to using a damp cloth to remove any dirt or mud.
- If you’ve got any Velcro straps make sure you keep them clean and clear of hay, horse hair shavings or any other kind of ‘stuff’. A Velcro brush is brilliant for doing this.
- Avoid using detergents as they might compromise the effectiveness of the foam.
- DO NOT put it in the washing machine or get it dry cleaned!
When do I need to replace my body protector?
- Obviously if it no longer fits or has broken bits that can’t be repaired
- Otherwise between 3 and 5 years depending on how regularly you wear it.
- After five years the absorption properties of the foam may start to decline and your body protector will not be able to offer you the best protection. The better you look after it will also help too. Try not to leave it on the floor of the tack room or dumped in the lorry. A bit of TLC will go a long way to keeping your body protector effective for longer.
What about when I've had a fall?
- If you’ve had a heavy fall, check your body protector as soon as possible for any dents.
- The foam should expand back to its original shape within 30 minutes.
- If any dents are still visible, or if the foam has permanently hardened, then it’s likely that this part of the garment has lost its impact absorption properties and should be replaced.
Are there any additional accessories to make my body protector even safer?
