If you’re starting in the world of show jumping, or just trying to work out your wardrobe for your next event, this guide should help you decide what to wear for show jumping competitions.

Showjumping wear needs to allow flexibility and movement for tackling the biggest fences and tight turns. Here are our tips to help you look really smart on the course:

  • Riding Breeches: A pair of neutral breeches or jodhpurs are traditional with no black or navy.

  • Show jackets: A tailored jacket which allows movement while riding is essential for the ring but if you’re riding affiliated, check in the British Showjumping rules so you know what colours you’re allowed to wear. There are also new style jackets that you might be interested in too! But check the rules first.

  • Show shirts: A lightweight shirt, in any white or pastel color if it has a white collar is permitted. If your choice in show shirts is long-sleeved for the colder months, the cuffs must also be white.
  • Stocks and Ties: For ladies, if the collar of your show shirt is high, you do not need a stock or tie. Otherwise, either a stock or tie is needed.
  • Gloves: Again, neutral colours, or those which complement your show jacket work.
  • Footwear: Long boots can be in black, brown or navy, and there’s also the option to wear short jodhpur boots with smart matching gaiters or chaps.

  • Rider protection: Depending on the specific regulations of the show you are attending, a body protector is optional from a rule perspective, but it’s obviously safer to wear one. You will also need a hat of current standards.
