With the competition divided into three sections: dressage, showjumping and cross country, you’ll need a few more items of clothing if you’re eventing. That said, there are lots of cross overs between phases, although you might want to take some spares, particularly shirts and breeches, in case you get hot or dirty in one phase and still want to look your best.

The dressage and showjumping elements are largely similar to the individual phases (see our  blogs on what to wear for showjumping and dressage) with the main difference in jackets (single colour in muted tones, coloured detailing is allowed too) breeches (navy and black are permitted), and boots (plain black and brown). For cross country, something different is needed.

  • Base layers and Riding Tops: Base layers are a great choice when going cross country as they should help to keep you comfortable, provide unrestricted movements, prevent you becoming excessively hot, and you can really express your personality with bright colours here. We love the LeMieux base layers and their matching hat silks for this reason – there are so many to choose from that there really is something for everyone.

Number bib: A number bib is needed for cross-country. Some people also opt to wear a medical arm band. If you do, it should be filled in fully as this information is really important if you get involved in an accident and need medical attention.

  • Rider protection: A body protector and a riding helmet without a fixed peak is mandatory for this part of the competition, to keep you safe. Make sure that whatever you wear fits correctly, is of the relevant standard, and isn’t too old. Body protectors and hats have a lifespan, and when worn beyond this, they don’t provide the same amount of protection. You may also wear an air jacket.

Important

This guide should help you work out what to wear for your next eventing competition but, as with the other disciplines, we strongly recommend that you review the rules for your specific competition so you have everything you need.
