If the cold, miserable January weather has got you down, we have a few things that you might like to think about and even plan for the year ahead. Whether you’re an experienced rider or a beginner, here are a few things you might like to try over the next few months…
Go to a big show – we have some incredible equestrian events in the UK from Badminton and Burghley to Hickstead and Horse of the Year Show and plenty more in between. Why not plan to go and see the action up close?
Learn more about horse anatomy – not only is this seriously interesting, but it could also help you understand more about all aspects of your riding and care from warming up to cooling down, how to prevent injury, feeding rules, and what areas your horse might need support with.
Try something different – jousting, liberty, driving, Western, polo, archery on horseback, there’s a lot of less mainstream equestrian activities that you can try, and some incredible instructors and providers all over the UK to help you.
Western Riding SaddleMeet a hero – we’re lucky to have so many iconic riders and horses spread all over the UK, and there are lots of opportunities to meet them too. Many riders offer yard tours, often in conjunction with sponsors, where if you’re selected you can go and learn more about how they operate. Some riders also have open days where you can buy tickets and go and meet your idols at home. Such a fun way to see riders away from competition and learn more about them and their horses.
Compete – this might be at a ‘normal’ show, or it could be from home. There are a number of online dressage competitions that allow you to film a test at home before sending it to be judged… and often you can win rosettes and prizes too!Try competing?
Volunteer – there are lots of worthwhile charities that make a massive difference to horses and people – whether these are charities that rescue horses, rehab charities, or organisations like RDA, there are plenty of opportunities to give back, support a great cause, and spend some more time with the equines we all love.Volunteer with Ride High
Set your goals -if you haven’t done it yet, think about what you personally want to achieve their year. It could be working towards something like a BHS exam, doing a nutrition course, competing at your first BE event, or spending more time with your horse. Whatever it is, make a plan to make it happen and get going!
Which ones are you going to try? Or are you going for something else altogether?
