Mud and puddles go hand in hand with horse ownership and equestrian activities in the winter (and sometimes spring, autumn and summer!) months, but we’re here to help with our top six wellingtons for horsey people. We’ve selected a range of wellingtons to suit all budgets, from different brands, with different features. If you’re feeling a bit confused about what to buy, here are our top six wellingtons for equestrians….
And if you’re struggling to find a perfect fitting pair, either because your calves are on the bigger size (like mine) or super slim (not like mine!), then read to the bottom for our top tips on boots that’ll work for you.
Best for budget- Dunlop Pricemastor Wellingtons
We love… the 3mm neoprene lining that these wellingtons feature. These boots are a perfect blend of style, comfort and durability for equestrians who demand the best. They’ll keep your feet warm through cold rides or wet yard work. If you want a wellington that looks classic, performs brilliantly and will see you through muddy fields, shows and everything in between – these are for you.
We love… how lightweight and nimble these wellies are, without sacrificing protection or comfort. The combination of durable rubber with lightweight neoprene keeps water out but doesn’t leave you lugging around heavy boots. If you want a pair of wellies that won’t weigh down your legs but will still stand up to the mud and wet, these are hard to beat.
We love… the gold hardware adds a real fashion forward look, but when combined with the luxury sherpa fleece liner, they’re cosy in the coolest weather as well. They also sport traction grips for all terrain and have a side gusset for a flexible fit.
Soles for stability - Ariat Woodstock Rubber Boots
We love… the ATS Pro technology for stability and comfort, combined with the Duratread Outsole with heel kick feature to make taking boots off a breeze. We also like the leather detailing at the top and on the adjustable strap at the side.
Adjustable Aigle - Aigle Parcours 2 Vario Wellingtons
We love… the adjustable gusset with tightening straps makes these boots perfect for a wide range of calves, but there’s more to these than that! In addition, they’re made from Gomma Plus, which is a special Aigle exclusive that makes the boots waterproof and flexible, and the softex lining will also help keep your feet really comfortable, even if you wear your wellies all day long.
The extra bit at the bottom...
If you can never find boots wide enough to fit your calves then read on!
The struggle is real – we know that. Sometimes it feels as though every pair of boots was designed to make your heart sink. But fear not – there are some wellies that are worth a try. Here are our suggestions:
Aigle Parcours Iso. My all-time favourites and generous in the calf. With an amazing footbed they’re incredibly comfortable to wear for hours on end and neoprene lining means they keep your feet nice and warm. This also means that they can be a bit tight taking them off – you’ll need a boot jack – but it’s total worth it!
Muck Boot Chore. These are great if you’re not the tallest. Still a full length, waterproof boot they’re a bit shorter than the average and the super stretchy neoprene upper is great for larger calves.
And if the opposite applies, and you find everything swamps you, have you tried?
Le Chameau Wellington Boots. The ladies fit is snug and slim. Narrower on the foot and shaped through the ankle and leg these are simply the best wellies for ladies with legs that are not like mine! (p.s. if your heart is set on some Chams did you know that in sizes 39, 40, 41 and 42 the Vierzonord comes in three fits: ladies, mens and XL? There’s a great chance that one will fit if you’re lucky enough to have the right sized feet…)
