Choosing the right studs for your horse

There are a lot of studs on the market, and we understand that it can be hard to pick which style is right for your horse, particularly if you’re fairly new to studs. However, we’ve been working with riders and selling studs for years, so we’re here to help. We’ve put together a guide for you below, to help you select the right studs for your horse. Don’t forget we’re also available on the phone, via email, or you can come along and see us in store and we’ll help you pick the right studs for your horse.

So, what are studs?

Studs are usually made from metal and screw into the stud holes on the horse’s shoes. If you’re thinking of using studs for your horse, make sure you speak to the farrier when they’re shoeing your horse so the stud holes are there (and find out what size holes there putting in!). Studs can be used to help promote grip and prevent the horse slipping on grass surfaces when ridden. This applies to muddy and wet conditions as much as dry, hard ground when conditions can also be challenging.

Which shape of stud should I pick for my horse?

In general, spiky studs should be used on hard ground with the point acting a bit like a high heeled stiletto. In this case, a lot of weight moves down into the point which makes it easier to sink into the ground. Square or chunky studs that have more of a flat surface than a point are good for soft, muddy ground as they push down with ease to help improve grip.

Make sure you use the correct studs for the ground conditions to minimise the risk of jarring or concussion for your horse.

How many studs should I use?

There should be two stud holes in each shoe, and many people advise using two studs to help the horse to remain correctly balanced. Some people start using studs in the horse’s hind shoes and, if more grip is needed, put them in the front shoes too. If the horse is jumping, some people will use a stud guard on their horse when it is wearing studs in front to prevent injury when the horse tucks his front legs up as he jumps.

Is there just one size of stud?

No, studs are available in 3/8” and 5/16” sizes. 3/8” is the most common, but ask your farrier what size your stud holes are as the wrong size won’t work.

How do I keep stud holes clean when not in use?

It’s important to keep the stud holes clean when they’re stud free as it’s very hard to clear compacted mud and dirt from the threads! To do this, you can buy specially designed stoppers or you can use cotton wool and pack it in really tightly. Then, when you need to use the holes, just take the stuffing out, re-tap your holes to make sure that the thread is a good as it can be, screw the studs in, and you’re ready to go.

Do studs rust?

Depending on what the studs are made from, they could well rust if not looked after well between uses. To do this, make sure they’re clean and dry when you put them away, and store them in an airtight container.
