Choosing the Right Turnout Rug for Your Horse

When it comes to keeping your horse dry and comfortable in the field, turnout rugs are a must-have. These rugs are specially designed with a waterproof outer layer, a smooth polyester inner, and optional padding for added warmth during colder months.

Understanding Turnout Rug Weights

Horse turnout rugs are available in three main weights, each catering to specific weather conditions. Lightweight turnout rugs, ideal for wet summer months, have no fill. Mediumweight turnout rugs, with 150g-250g fill, are perfect for spring and autumn. Heavyweight turnout rugs, 300g and above, provide extra insulation for very cold or snowy conditions.

Considerations for Weight Selection

Choosing the right weight involves assessing ambient temperature, field exposure, available shelter, and your horse's natural coat type, age, and whether they are clipped. Neck covers, offered in various styles like standard, integrated, detachable, or half neck (wug), provide additional protection, with detachable options allowing flexibility based on weather conditions.

Outer Fabric Types and Their Impact

Turnout rugs come in different outer fabric types affecting waterproofing, breathability, and durability. Introductory price rugs often use 600 denier polyester, but higher deniers, such as 900D or 1200D, offer increased strength. Nylon, known for its durability, and rugs featuring ripstop technology are also available. Choosing a stronger denier rug with a ripstop ensures longevity, especially if your horse tends to tear rugs in the field. While it may be tempting to opt for the cheapest rug, investing in a stronger denier and ripstop technology can be more cost-effective in the long run. These features allow for easy repair of tears or holes, ensuring your turnout rug lasts and keeps your horse comfortable for seasons to come.
