Why not check out our You Tube how to guides on:

Gaiters

When it comes to gaiters, these are usually made from leather and have the zip at the back of the leg, and a high cut to the outside. They work with jodhpur boots and paddock boots and are designed to give the look of long leather riding boots.

Half chaps

Now, half chaps are slightly different. They, like gaiters, fit on the lower part of the leg over jodhpur boots or paddock boots, but that’s where they similarities end. They usually have their zip to the outside of the leg and can be made from a range of different materials such as leather, suede, neoprene or other synthetic materials. Half chaps are usually softer and more flexible than gaiters, making them more comfortable to wear day in, day out.

Gaiters or half chaps?

If you’re planning to use your purchase for competition, gaiters are usually a better option thanks to the slim, elegant and tailored fit they provide. If you’re looking for something to wear every day, then the chances are that half chaps are the best option for you.

If you’re planning to wear anything for competition, always make sure that you’ve checked the competition rules beforehand.

How to put on half chaps

Half chaps worn with jodhpur or paddock boots can be a great alternative to long leather or long rubber riding boots, but do you know how to put them on properly? We’re here to help.

Fitting half chaps

When you’re putting half chaps on, first make sure they’re well positioned over the boot, so the strap that passes under the boot sits firmly up next to the where the heel block starts. Now, simply wrap them around the leg and zip them up so that the zip sits on the outside of the leg.

You might find that some half chaps have additional press stud fastenings at the top and/or bottom, and some even have hook and loop style closures up some or part of the zip.

When it comes to fitting your half chaps and making sure they’re the right ones for you, you’re looking for a close yet comfortable fit. Most half chaps have an elasticated section at the back. In some cases, this is quite a large section to the outside of the half chaps, and in other cases it’s a relatively slim piece of elastic that goes up next to the zip.

You want to make sure that the half chaps do up fairly easily, but with a little bit of tension. If they do up too easily they’ll slip down when you’re in the saddle.

There are lots of different types of half chaps available – in different fits, sizes and materials. So if you’ve tried half chaps before and haven’t found the right fit for you, don’t give up - come and see us in store.
