Making a Littlemax Bed
To start a new Littlemax bed, an average of 4 to 6 bags is recommended, with each 18 kg bag covering approximately 2 to 3 square metres to achieve the ideal depth.
As Littlemax is pressure packed, the shavings should be fluffed up to break them apart, and once loosened you will find that each bag goes a long way. Create an even, level bed 6 to 8 inches deep across the entire floor, allowing moisture to drain through the layers and be absorbed at the base of the bed.
Banks can be used around the walls as a reserve of clean, dry shavings, but they should be shaken out regularly to keep them fresh and clean.
Maintaining a Littlemax Bed
To maintain an ideal bed, horses should be removed from the stable where possible, while mucking out, and all droppings should be removed from the surface using a shavings fork.
Shake the fork gently to allow clean shavings to fall back onto the bed and minimise waste, then loosen the surface and remove any dirty or wet bedding underneath, banking clean shavings to one side to reduce wastage.
Fresh shavings should be added as needed to maintain the correct depth, with most customers using around 1 to 1.5 bags per week.
